How to Format Nokia S60 device

Here is the trick for complete formatting of your virus infected or other problem arriving Nokia mobile phone.image

  • Soft Reset (*#7780#): This is a normal reset. It will load the original settings from the phone's ROM. However, it will retain the user's own data. Like images, music, installed applications etc.
  • Hard Reset (*#7370#): This method completely reformats the C: drive (phone memory). All the user information will be deleted. Like images, music files, installed applications etc. Hence, the phone is set to the default factory settings.

On performing any of above methods of formatting the phone, device will ask you for a security/lock code. Default code is 12345.

Data stored on E: drive (memory card) will not be affected by these sequences.

You can also try for the alternative approach.

* Switch Off the device.
* Press and Hold down the keys Green/Talk + 3 + *.
* Switch On the device.
* If everything goes well then you will see "Formatting" screen.

Note: Please make sure that your device is fully charged before you proceed with formatting the device. If the battery goes down during this procedure, It may result in inconsistent state of your device.

What to do after formatting the devices phone memory

Before format a S60 handset be sure that you have a made a backup of the phone memory. Either with the build in backup program of your device or with the program Content Copier of the Nokia PC Suite. For a strong backup procedure, make a backup with both programs before format the device.

When the device is back do one of the following steps:

  • The first important actions is to restore the previously made backup!! Do this step before any other action!!! You can do this either with the build in backup program on the device or with the program Content Copier from he Nokia PC Suite.
  • Restart the device

A few programs and in this case that means only the program binaries and resources are not backed up by the backup process. Install this program in the newest version after restoring the device phone memory.

  • Nokia maps
  • Nokia Share Online Update

If Java ME programs installed on the device, eg: enhanced S60 calculator, widsets or GMail Client for S60, use the MIDlet Restore program to reactivate this programs. Now reinstall is needed, only run this program. This process takes a few minutes or longer if you have many Java ME programs.

The connected Bluetooth devices list are also not included in the backup. So register this devices after the restore, e.g.

  • Nokia BT receiver LD 3W
  • Nokia BT headset BH503

After all this actions, to as last action an final restart the device.

Menu quick access - Over in the menu e.g. to point 3.1 arrive simply 31 enter (if the third symbol a file is opened is for these and then in it started the first Program/Icon).
No Auto start - When switching the phone on up to the pin inquiry press the whole time the "ABC" key (pen) - this is to ignore the auto initialization programs (and the MMC programs) - "safe boot".
12345 ... is according to be the standard Nokia Nokia-security code.
0000 ... is according to be standard PIN2 at Vodafone (Germany)
----------------------------------------
Caution - starting from here the codes are "dangerous"
*#7370925538#
*#Res0Wallet#
... is to delete the code around the "wallet"
Input like normal telephone number (not in wallet code inquiry windows).

NOTE! Afterwards the "wallet" is empty, can again be put on however with new code.
*#7780# - Reset to original settings

NOTE! Afterwards various "attitudes" are away - among other things these:
Points of entrance (Provider dependent points of entrance and attitudes)

Bluetooth attitudes
Favorite Allocation of the two keys (beside Navi keys) in the main menu
Profiles are "neglected" (as with distribution) - still there however new bell tones, etc. are...
SMS/MMS/E-Mail attitudes
Logos also deleted... Programs, calendars and contacts, etc. not changed...

*#7370# - Soft format - resets all the telephone Memory (like Formatting a disk
NOTE! Battery should be full up to at least 75%, do not accomplish during the procedure under any circumstances ! The procedure takes some minutes (approx. 3-4)
Green, * 3 - Hard format: If the Mobile (only telephone memory) formats, puts back the attitudes (see * to # 7780 #) and implements a RESET.

NOTE! Battery should be full up to at least 75%, do not accomplish during the procedure under any circumstances ! The procedure takes some minutes (approx. 3-4)

Proceeding: Equipment switch off, keep "green key" (take off) at the same time pressed, "*" and to "3" key and switch the equipment on (the keys thereby keep further pressed)... to "Formatting" on the display appears...

Cell phones
Tip 1: Do you know how to use the edit button (abc or pencil button)?
Here is how... in the inbox for example; you want to delete multiple SMS, simply hold the edit button, scroll down, and then, press c to delete the marked SMS. The edit button can also be used to copy and past text in SMS, simply hold it and scroll across, choose copy. pretty good for placing song names in N-Gages

Tip 2: Shit happens, on a smart phone, its inevitable you do something wrong, and this calls for a format of phone. to format the phone, press *#7370#, then enter the lock code, which is the secret code of the phone. NOTE : battery must be full, else if format is disrupted by low battery, consequences will be disastrous

I heard the code *#7780# works too, pretty much the same i think.
for 6600 users, to format the phone, there is an alternative way. Press and hold <3>, <*>, and the buttons, then power on phone, keep holding on the 3 buttons, till you come to a format screen. This method ONLY works on 6600, and need not enter the sec code. BUT secret code would be reset to default 12345.

There are two kinds of formatting: hard formatting and soft formatting
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SOFT formatting: This does not really format your phone (c-drive). It restores ini files from rom but preserves user data (photos, 3rd party apps etc). This is just a normal reset!!
HOW? There are two ways to do a normal reset:
1) *#7780# (this seems to work only on S60 v6.1 and 7.0)
2) Go to Settings, General and scroll down to factory settings (works on all S60 phones)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HARD formatting: This reformats completely the C-drive. All applications and files stored on this drive will be lost and clean but default files will be rewritten. This is a deep reset.
HOW? Again there are two ways:
1) *#7370#
2) When unable to startup your phone: press and hold the green (talk) key on the left + number 3 on the keypad + the * key and then turn the phone on. This trick works on every S60 v7.0 and it works fine on my 6630 too but without formatting screen...

Tip 3: TO NGAGE USERS; Did you know you can install .sis files simply using the cable given? Just plug it in, place the .sis file anywhere on eg: (the mmc), not in any folders, root of eg:, disconnect, then look for it in manager.

Tip 4: Save on battery and system memory being used by regularly checking the task manager which can be accessed by holding down the menu button!!

Tip 5: Type *#06# to display your IMEI serial number, very valuable for the unlocking your phone to other SIM cards...

Tip 6: Save memory when installing apps, by installing over Bluetooth. This can be done using the Nokia phone suite and a Bluetooth serial connection. Only works with .SIS files, so java still has to be sent to the phone, but will save space when using .SIS files.

Tip 7: Operator logos
Use a file manager like FExplorer or SeleQ to add the folders: "c:/system/Apps/phone/oplogo". Add a .bmp picture to folder "oplogo" and restart your phone! The .bmp picture size needs to be: 97 x 25 pixels

Tip 8: Blue Jacking
First up, you need to know what Bluetooth is. There are lots of types of modern devices that incorporate Bluetooth as one of their many features. PDAs, mobile phones and laptops are a few of these modern devices. Bluetooth means that Bluetooth enabled devices can send things like phonebook/address book contacts, pictures & notes to other Bluetooth enabled devices wirelessly over a range of about 10 meters. So, we've got past the boring part. Now, using a phone with Bluetooth, you can create a phonebook contact and write a message, eg. 'Hello, you've been blue jacked', in the 'Name' field. Then you can search for other phones with Bluetooth and send that phonebook contact to them. On their phone, a message will popup saying "'Hello, you've been blue jacked' has just been received by Bluetooth" or something along those lines. For most 'victims' they will have no idea as to how the message appeared on their phone.

Tip 9: While you are viewing a picture in your phone's gallery, press one of these shortcut keys (definitely works on 6600, not sure about other Symbians)
1 - turn image anticlockwise
3 - turn image clockwise
* - toggle on/off of full screen
5 - zoom in
0 - zoom out

Tip 10: Operator logos
Use a file manager like FExplorer or SeleQ to add the folders: "c:/system/Apps/phone/oplogo". Add a .bmp picture to folder "oplogo" and restart your phone! The .bmp picture size needs to be: 97 x 25 pixels

Tip 11: Check if the recipients phone is on
Delivery reports
or
Type *0# your message in the message composer window space then write your message, the recipient will not see the star zero hash bit - just the message When they read it it will relay a message back to your phone showing the time they received it. (haven't yet tried it myself though)
A soft and Hard reset
A Soft-reset - the process of resetting all the settings of the phone to the factory default! No applications are deleted! A Hard-reset is like formatting a drive! It does format the memory. Everything that has been installed after the first use of the phone is deleted! It will recover the memory of the phone to the state you purchased it! It is done by input the following code: *#7370# NOTE: The battery must be full or the charger has to be connected to the phone so that it does not run out of power and make the phone unusable

Start up in Safe Mode so no 'auto start' apps will be running:
To make sure that no memory-resident programs start when you reboot your phone,
hold down the pencil key when you turn on the phone and hold it on until you have to enter your PIN code.

(When you have trouble booting up the phone with the MMC in it because it got corrupted for some reason, this trick will almost always let you boot up the phone so you can remove the latest installed app which might have caused the problem or if your phone is "un repairable" you can still back up your important data before you do a format.)

Nokia Code function

    Apple iPhone 4 New features and discription

    We’ve seen what Steve Job’s keynote address at WWDC 2010 was all about; now let’s focus a bit more on today’s main attractive, the newly announced iPhone 4 smartphone.

    First off, here are the new key features of the iPhone 4
    * All-new design making the iPhone 4 the thinnest smartphone ever
    * “Retina display” – the highest resolution display ever built into a mobile phone
    * “FaceTime” – video calling finally comes to iPhone albeit it only works with Wi-Fi connections right now
    * Upgraded camera to 5 megapixels complete with LED flash
    * 720p HD video recording
    * The iPad’s A4 processor
    * The latest iPhone OS 4 – now known as “iOS 4”
    * Built-in 3-axis gyro

    Let’s first dig into the physical details of the new smartphone. The iPhone 4 measures 4.5 x 2.31 x 0.37 inches and weighs a mere 4.8oz – making it the thinnest smartphone yet.

    The front and back are made of aluminosilcate glass, chemically strengthened to be 30 times harder than plastic, more scratch-resistant and more durable than ever before. In addition, the front and back glass feature an oil-resistant, fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating.

    Encircling the iPhone 4 along the sides is a highly-finished stainless steel band made of a custom allow five times stronger than standard steel.

    You’ll find a 3.5 mm stereo headphone minijack on top and a microphone/built-in speaker on the bottom, along with the familiar dock connector interface.

    The new Retina display measures 3.5 inches diagonally and features an awesome resolution of 960 x 640, a contrast ratio of 800:1 and a crazy pixel density of 326 pixels per inch (ppi). At this ppi, it’s more than the human eye can discern when the phone is held at a normal distance.

    You’ll find two cameras on the iPhone 4 – a front-facing VGA camera and a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with 5x digital zoom, backside illuminated sensor, and built-in LED flash. You’ll also be able to record video at 720p resolutions at 30 frames per second and yes you’ll be able to use the built-in LED light with video recording. Apple is also introducing the iMovie app for the iPhone allowing you to perform video editing right on the iPhone itself for a mere $4.99.

    On the connectivity front, iPhone 4 supports the following: * UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA (850, 900, 1900, 2100 MHz)
    * GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
    * 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi (802.11n 2.4GHz only)
    * Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR wireless technology

    On the sensor front, iPhone 4 features a built-in accelerometer, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, and a new three-axis gyro. The three axis gyro when combined with the accelerometer provides 6 axis motion sensing such as up/down, side to side, forward and back, and pitch/roll. Expect some awesome gaming apps to utilize this new sensor.

    Power-wise, iPhone 4 still has a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery but battery life has been improved to: * 7 hours of talk time on 3G
    * 14 hours of talk time on 2G
    * 300 hours of standby time
    * 6 hours of Internet usage on 3G
    * 10 hours of Internet usage on Wi-Fi
    * Up to 10 hours of video playback
    * Up to 40 hours of audio playback
    On the software front, iPhone 4 comes with the new iOS 4 (formerly known as iPhone OS 4) operating system featuring over 100 new features including multi-tasking, folders, enhanced email, enhanced Enterprise support, and Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform.

    Features of audio playback include: * Frequency response of 20Hz to 20,000Hz
    * Audio file format support for AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), HE-AAC, MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV
    * User-configurable maximum volume limit

    Features of video playback include:
    * Video file format support for H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

    * Support for 1024 by 768 pixels with Dock Connector to VGA Adapter; 576p and 480p with Apple Component AV Cable; 576i and 480i with Apple Composite AV Cable (cables sold separately)
    On the storage capacity front, iPhone 4 comes in only two capacities – 16GB and 32GB. Disappointingly, there’s no 64GB version of the iPhone 4.

    AND finally, prices for the new iPhone 4 are as follows – $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model (both of which are upgrade prices mind you).
